Clay Figure

Here are some examples of the clay work the students have been working on.  These pieces have been bisque fired, next they will be glazed, and finally fired again.

The Kiln is wear the get baked or fired. It is like an oven but it reaches usually 2000 degrees F. Glazing is the same thing as painting except the glaze is really a thin layer of glass that is applied to the piece of clay after the first fireing.

Whoa!!!! I see my sweet little mohawked dude!!!!! Haha…

Anyways, a glaze is usually a thin shiny coating on something; in this case it is going to be paint on clay. Glaze can be used for either decoration, or protection, for our projects it is going to be used for decoration. However if something was carved out of wood, it would most likely be used for protection against water damage. After we glaze our projects they will be thrown into the kiln and fired again. A kiln is a furnace used for drying and hardening clay among other materials. Before we could paint it, it had to be fired to make them stronger and able to hold the paint. After they are painted, they need to be fired to dry the paint and harden the glaze paint.

Bisque, also called biscuit, is a fired piece of unglazed ceramic ware. Bisque firing is done at very high temperatures, upwards of 1000 °C and makes clay works hard and durable, yet still able to be glazed. --Nook

A kiln is the oven type machine that you can out your clay works in once its ready to be fired. You should fire your clay figure before you paint/glaze it. Once its done being fired you can galze it. Glaze is the shiny coating applied to your figure.

A kiln is an oven that hardens and dries your clay piece (and any paint or glaze that you may have put on it).

Bisque Firing is the process of firing unglazed clay to a low temperature to harden the clay and drive the water from it. The approximate temperature of this firing is 1815 F.

I reaaaally hope this is the write post to comment on. Well.. Yeah. My sculpture requires gluing. 0_o

Okay. Glaze is what you put on your sculpture after it's fully dried out, and before you put it in the kiln. It's basically the top coat that allows the sculpture to be painted, and it makes the sculpture stronger. It also waterproof's the sculpture and smooths out the surface.

glazing is when you put a paint on the clay piece to give it color. After you put the colors you want on the clay you fire it again so when it comes out it is all shiny and colorful.

These are really cool! I like the one with the mowhawk and the guitar. :) You use glaze as paint on clay and ceramics and you can apply 2 or 3 coats to make the color look darker. Some types of clay can be glazed before you put them in the kiln but usually they are glazed after being fired.

When firing, it is possible to use either electric, or fuel burning kilns, but electric is preferred. This is because it is easier to control the temperature of electric kilms, because, so it allows the person controlling the operation to ensure a better final result. Fuel burning kilns can get out of control.

Bisque firing is where an unglazed piece of cermaics is fired. It allows the piece to become much harder but still porous enough and maintains the ability to absorb glaze.

A kiln is a furnace for firing pottery. When planning on putting an art piece into a kiln it is important to make sure all of your details and pieces you added onto your pottery is held on well, otherwise it easily breaks off while being fired. To ensure this you can use cross hatching before attaching and apply slip, a mixture of clay and water.

A kiln is the thing that broke the hand off of my sculpture. Haha no that was my fault.

A kiln is an oven used to harden, burn, or dry materials. Bisque Fired refers to a piece ofunglazed ceramic pottery, Bisque Firing temperatures usually reach 1000 degrees celsius and the result is a much harder article which is still porous and able to absorb glaze. Glaze is a layer or coating of a vitreous ( low permeability to liquids)substance used to color, decorate, strengthen or waterproof the piece of pottery.

when working with clay, it is possible for the piece to get fired. it can be painted and then coated with glaze, which is a thin layer of glass. it is then fired in a kiln which reaches temperatures of over 1000 degrees. our pieces in class were fired once, going to get painted and glazed, then put back in the kiln one more time. bisque firing is when the clay gets fired without paint or glaze to dry and harden the clay.

A kiln is an oven that used to harden and dry the glaze on clay figures. Bisque firing is the first firing of clay and gives the clay figure strength. Glaze is paint that makes the clay figure shiny and more colorful.

Bisque Firing is the first firing of a clay piece. The purpose of bisque firing is essentially to rid the clay of most of the water in it and to give it more strength so it doesn't crack and/or break. Approximately 1700-1800 degrees F is what a typical firing would normally be. A glaze is just a thin gloss that is painted on the clay before it goes in the kiln which waterproofs the pottery and also strengthens it preceding the firing.

I have learned alot about ceramics in the past few years. THis year has been fun making ceramic sculputures i cant wait to galze mine and see how is comes out. Bisque fired is the first firing that hardens the clay. The glaze you put on after the piece is bisque fired makes the sculpture shiny and smooth. I really enjoyed this unit.

Nice lil' mohawk dude alison!!

k, so a kiln is the place you put finished works of art (that are clay, not paper) and they get fired to the point where they get very hard, then it wont fall apart whenever you touch it!! haha!

AJ said...

oh and i forgot to add that in order for your "finished work of art" to stay in tact and to prevent it from exploding and ruining classmates projects, you should keep the clay COMPLETELY BUBBLE FREE as in no large lumps that can explode due to high air pressure caused by heat circulation in the bubble thingy (thank you earth science!!)

the one with the mohawk is awsomee!!!

A kiln is a furnace or oven used for baking or firing pottery. A ceramics kiln has a series of adjustable shelves to fit ceramics on while they are being fired.

This was really fun. Wedging the clay gets the air bubbles out so it doesn't explode in the kiln.

After the clay has been bisque fired you can paint it with either nprmal paint or glaze. Glaze is a paint-like substance that once fired a second time is chemically changed by the high heats of the kiln into a thin layer of glass.

bisque firing is firing unglazed clay in a kiln, which is a big oven used to fire clay pieces, glaze is alot like paint, but is a thin layer of glass put on to the clay after the first firing.

When you finish you piece you must wait for it to bone dry. Bone dry is when you piece is at room temperatre and you can then have it be fired for the first time.

a Kiln is where the clay is fired when your done working on your clay piece. You glaze your clay piece when it comes out of the kiln the first time. The glaze is used as a paint for the clay but also protects it against water. When you are done glazing your clay you put it in the kiln for the last time which is the final step of working with clay.
