First Assignment of the school year!

This is a photograph of the Studio Art classes first assignment.

Process:
An original poster of Grand Central Station in NYC was gridded into 1"x1" squares.
Each square was lettered and numbered on the back.
The poster was cut up into 494 pieces, each 1"x1."
Students had to pull a square randomly from a box.
After a square was chosen, the students were given an ebony pencil, and a 2"x2" piece of illustration board.
The students were to make the illustration board look as much like the piece of poster as possible, close observation was crucial.
After all 494 pieces were complete, with letter and number label on the back, the 2"x2" pieces were put back together in a grid.
This image is the final product, a 38"x52" drawing, the students did not know what they were making!
